Ingredients:
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- teaspoon salt
- Red and blue food coloring
- White decorating icing
Instructions:
Melt the butter and mix it with the sugar in a large bowl until the mixture is light and fluffy
Add the egg and vanilla extract and mix them in well
Mix the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt together in a different bowl
Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ones and mix them together until they are just combined
Cut the cookie dough into three equal parts
Leave one part plain, use the red food coloring to color another part, and use the blue food coloring to color the last part
Roll the dough out until the color is spread out evenly
Make a rectangle out of each color of dough, wrap it in plastic wrap, and put it in the fridge for at least an hour
Warm the oven up to 350F 175C and put parchment paper on a baking sheet
After taking the dough out of the fridge, cut each color into thin strips
Put the strips together in a patriotic way, switching between red, white, and blue
Press the strips together gently to make a block of dough that sticks together
Once the baking sheet is ready, cut the block into cookies and place them on it
After the oven is hot, bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the edges are just beginning to turn golden
After taking the cookies out of the oven, let them cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet before moving them to a wire rack to cool all the way down
After the cookies are completely cool, decorate the blue and red parts of the cookies with white icing
Add stars and stripes
Before you serve or store the cookies, let the frosting set
